Anglo Saxon Place Names Quiz - The Answers

ALDBOROUGH = old fortification

ASKHAM = homestead in the ash trees

BARWICK = old barley farm

BEWERLEY = beavers' field

BURNHAM = homestead by the stream

CARLTON = freeman's town

MORLEY - marshy field

SANDBACH = sandy stream

FLEETHAM = homestead by the creek

WAINFLEET = shallow creek where a waggon can cross

WALDEN = valley of the Britons

WALSHFORD = ford of the Britons

STOWMARKET = market where many meet

STONYHURST = stoney, wooded hill

TONBRIDGE = bridge belonging to the town

NOTE: ham, ton, wick and ley all usually refer to some sort of settlement or enclosure in a forest clearing. The idea that a "town" has to be bigger than a village is modern.
