Description

John Hartley was perhaps the most read Yorkshire dialect writer of his day.  For almost 50 years he produced the annual Clock Almanack, until his death in 1915.   In 1904 it was claiming an annual circulation of 120,000.

Each issue provided an annual calendar, expanded with humorous asides, commentary, and short tales.

His writings, in dialect, on the every day life and topics of the day provide a viewpoint into the lives of ordinary people.  His opinions on subjects such as the church, courting, marriage, social injustice, trade unions, alcohol, give us insight into the people and conditions of what was everyday life of the times.  This book provides an informed oversight of the entire span, with some detail of Hartley’s life, together with a rich sprinkling from the ‘anecdotes’ which pervaded every edition.
