The ‘comic almanac’ of the nineteenth century was a widely read and popular booklet especially in the industrial West Riding, incorporating amusing and informative information.  Poems, prose, and social commentary, expressed in dialect.  Ben Dyson, then editor of Transactions  wrote about the ‘Alternative Press in the Nineteenth Century ‘ in 1974 and 1975, stating that ‘it is possible for present day speakers of dialect to gain some idea of the speech of the defined locality at a time when dialect was used naturally on the Bench and in the Dock; in the Pulpit as well as the Pew’.

The originals were printed on poor quality paper, sometimes with small and unclear print.  Although we have moved to A5 perfect bound instead of Octavo and staples, we have reproduced the original pages to convey the original appearance.
